We Must Learn From the Trump Era

America’s democracy cannot afford another four years of this dumpster fire.

egardless of your political allegiance, I think we can all agree that the four years of Donald Trump’s presidency have felt like a lifetime. Donald Trump’s presidency was a painful wake-up call for America. His lies, hate, corruption, greed, racism, and disinformation campaigns have divided America at such levels not seen since the Civil War.

For the first time in American history, the sitting President of the United States ignited and inspired a violent coup attempt on the U.S. Capitol building. The entire world watched in horror as the most powerful and influential democracy in history was under siege by domestic terrorists who supported Trump. Not since World War II has our democracy come so close to collapsing right before our very eyes. I will never forget the embarrassment and anger I felt when watching the riots at the Capitol. Anyone who loves history knows how precious democracy is and how quickly it can dissipate.

What We Have Learned

The undisputed failure that was the Trump presidency has undoubtedly set us back as a country, but it has also cast light on what America needs to fix. Trump repeatedly abused the powers of the presidency for his own personal and political gain. His routine authoritarian behavior brought the foundation of our nation to a near breaking point. We cannot afford to allow any American as sadistic as Trump to get near the White House ever again.

We knew there were a plethra of problems in our country but the Trump administration further enflamed and exposed them. Police brutality toward people of color, white supremacism, climate change rollbacks, political corruption, and disinformation ran amuck during the Trump presidency. Trump’s immigration policies were also horrifying and extremely racist. His administration separated hundreds of undocumented immigrant children from their parents at the Mexico border and kept them held in cages in abhorrent conditions.

Who could also forget Trump downplaying and basically ignoring the COVID-19 Pandemic which has now killed over 400,000 Americans and pushed our already overwhelmed healthcare system to the brink of collapse. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have a boatload of work to do to correct these problems but us Americans must also do our part by continuing to shed light on injustices.

The past four years have also shown us all the vital importance and power of voting; every vote truly matters. While Trump and many Republican allies tried to sew doubt in America’s electoral process, a record amount of Americans voted in the 2018 and 2020 federal elections, flipping the Senate in favor of the Democrats and decisively voting Trump out of office.

The Enablers Against Democracy & Truth

At last, we cannot forget the public figures with large platforms who were complicit in constantly pushing Trump’s harmful lies and propaganda to brainwash millions of Americans. Their lies and dangerous words directly incited the insurrection attempt at the Capitol building that left seven people dead, including fallen hero officer Brian D. Sicknick.

If these people try to distance themselves from Donald Trump and his family in the future, please do not forget their names and true colors:

Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Mark Levin, Jesse Waters, Dan Bongino, Jack Posobiec, Chanel Rion, Sean Davis, Will Chamberlain, Ben Domenech, Mollie Hemingway, Sara Carter, Kayleigh McEnany, Sean Spicer, Stephanie Grisham, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Josh Hawley, Ron Johnson, Lindsey Graham, Kevin McCarthy, Mitch McConnell, Jim Jordan, Matt Gaetz, Charlie Kirk, Franklin Graham, Steve Hilton, Madison Cawthorn, Lauren Boebert, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Devin Nunes, Louie Gohmert, Mike Lee, Steve Scalise, Brian Kilmeade, Mike Pence, David Perdue, Kelly Loeffler, Mo Brooks, Ronna McDaniel Romney, Daniel Scavino, Dan Crenshaw, James Lankford, Tommy Tuberville, Ali Alexander, Paul Gosar, Andy Biggs, John Ratcliffe, Mark Meadows, Stephen Miller, Elise Stefanik, Jacob Wohl, Ronny Jackson, Ken Buck, Jeff Sessions, Jeanine Pirro, Lou Dobbs, William Barr, Chip Roy, John Kennedy, Ron DeSantis, Betsy DeVos, Ben Carson, Roger Stone, Duncan Hunter, Terrence Williams, Melissa Tate, Diamond & Silk, Cory Gardner, Martha McSally, Thom Tillis, John Cornyn, Mike Pompeo, Greg Locke, Matt Couch, Cory Lewandowski, George Papadopolous, Paul Manafort, Rudy Giuliani, Jason Miller, Brad Parscale, Steve Bannon, Curt Schilling, Ken Paxton, Peter Navarro.

I’m certain that I missed quite a few more names but you get the point. All of these people showed absolute loyalty to Donald Trump over America by defending and spreading his hateful rhetoric and divisive propaganda night in and night out. Their words and actions must never be forgotten so they can be held accountable for the rest of their lives.

A Glimmer of Hope

If we properly learn our lessons from the Trump era, then we will never have to go through four years of hell like that again. Republicans and Democrats now have the chance to come together to repair the damage and improve America without lies, misinformation and hate being spewed by the president every day and night on Twitter.

I have a new appreciation for our democracy, as well as for public servants who serve America with integrity, dignity, honor and respect. It is clear that our democracy is not perfect, it is fragile and needs to be handled with care by those we can trust. We all have an important responsibility to never forget what happened during the Trump era so we can ensure that the worst presidency in history permanently remains history.
